New 6 Minute Video

In the fall of 2023, Conservation International - Hawaii invited Janey to teach 2 x week long workshops incorporating fish skin tanning and natural dyeing with a specific focus on utilizing the skins and parts of invasive fish such as ta’ape, to’au, Nile tilapia and roi. This short video captures some of the workshop in Hilo.

Janey's love for tanning fish skins is so inspiring, I'm impressed with her ability to teach this ancient skill through modern technology via zoom, in a way that feels tangible and accessible. I love my tanned fish skin and can't wait to tan more! ~Jessenia

love love love, she has the most wonderful personality that can take any stressful day and turn it into a fun, relaxing time and allows you to forget about everything for a moment *except your fish skin of course* ~ Charlee

Everything was very clear and well thought out, I felt in good hands and was able to connect to others as well, Janey managed to create a really friendly and collaborative atmosphere in the group, even online. I am a Chinese Canadian woman living in Ch’ích’elxwi7ḵw ~ North Vancouver, British Columbia ~ on the Ancestral Lands of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) who have thrived in reciprocal relationship with these lands since time immemorial. I am committed to critically assessing and re-evaluating the ways in which I walk through this world and on their lands, and to the best of my awareness and ability, taking care not to perpetuate but to dismantle Canada's deep legacy of racism and colonization. I welcome thoughtful, honest and respectful dialogue about how we can do better and be better in the spirit of bringing us closer to true healing and reconciliation for all Indigenous peoples.
